Revenge is best served cold klingon
Klingon: Star Trek by Dean Wesley SmithRevenge is a dish best served cold.
-- Klingon proverb
For many years, Klingons have been the premier warriors in the galaxy. Regarded across known space with fear and awe, few beings understand the true depth and greatness of the Klingon culture.
Four thousand throats may be cut in one night by a running man.
-- Klingon proverb
Noted Klingon language and cultural expert Marc Okrand collects the wisdom of these great warriors, taking proverbs and quotes from some of its greatest thinkers and bringing Klingon philosophy to lesser races across the galaxy.

Alrighty, this is a geek board and everybody knows that "Revenge is a dish that is best served cold" , and everyone probably knows that it is an old Klingon proverb. Quentin Tarantino also attributed this quote to the Klingons at the beginning of Kill Bill. I've now seen this quote used by many other people and movies the latest being "Man on Fire" which I have playing in the background. None of which attribute it to the Klingons or to Star Trek 2 but they are not specific to who actually quoted it. Is this is an issue of some artforms "borrowing" from other artforms? Is this quote older than Star Trek 2? Where does this quote originate?
This is a great line. It's intended to convey the notion that the best revenge is one you take your time with: where you think it through and plan it out with preparation and care instead of rushing off half-cocked in a blind rage. The odd thing is, that doesn't sound very Klingon, since they're a shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later kind of species.
Top definition. Revenge is a dish best served cold unknown. An old, widely used phrase expressing the sentiment that revenge that is delayed, and executed well after the heat of anger has dissipated , is more satisfying than revenge taken as an immediate act of rage. It has been frequently been claimed on the Internet to have originated in the novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. In truth, however, there are two problems with the widely circulated quotation from that book.
