The Harry Potter book series is considered one of the greatest series in literary history, beginning its commercial life on this day, twenty years ago. However, despite winning multiple literary awards and enjoying immediate transatlantic success, not every critic was convinced by the initial acclaim. These are one-dimensional children's books, Disney cartoons written in words, no more. Rowling's world is that it is pure cotton candy. Many religious titles and media outlets purported a high amount of anti- Harry Potter sentiment because they thought the novels were filled with Satanic subtext. T he absolute core of the children's canon — the classic classics, if you like, such as The Railway Children, The Wind in the Willows, The Jungle Book, The Secret Garden, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, etc — tend to be more than a century old, the product of "the golden age" of children's literature, covering roughly the late Victorian era to the end of the Edwardian age. Before that, you had to pity the poor juvenile bookworm. Or The History of the Fairchild Family , a series of moralistic stories emphasising the likelihood of hell and damnation for non-believers. What they wouldn't have given for a whiff of Badger, Ratty or Mole, let alone a page of Harry Potter. The proliferation of tales less exclusively concerned with the salvation of the nursery-dweller's immortal soul came about through a confluence of happy circumstances.
J K Rowling's Harry Potter novels have made her the most celebrated children's author in the world. Does she deserve her status? Journalists, librarians, booksellers, award judges - the hype for J K Rowling and Harry Potter has worked a treat, turning a straightforward rollicking yarn into a literary phenomenon, and persuading sane critics that an old-style comic book is a classic of inventive genius. I doubt that J K Rowling herself ever had such aims. I imagine that she set out to write an entertaining story of magic and adventure for children of all ages. And she succeeded.
