Chameleons Are Cool: Read and Wonder by Martin Jenkins

Summary and Critique:
This book describes the vast members of the reptile family and then narrows down to focus on chameleons specifically. Subjects covered include diet, size, appearance, temperament, and predatory abilities. One strength of this book was the captions under many of the illustrations, adding details to the main text. A criticism of the work is that it occasionally uses condescending language and controlled vocabulary.

Classroom use:
When reading this piece, I considered its usefulness during animal biome projects. Instead of having students study fact-filled cards, they may read a narrative which communicates the same information. Not only would this more successfully relay information, it would allow students to develop literacy and give context for new words. In order to complete this project though, I would need to locate numerous other books of a similar format. After developing an understanding of key vocabulary with the group, this text would be accessible for as young as third graders.
