I was born in Virginia, lived in Hawaii as a small child, but mostly schooled in the state of Washington in the northwest of the US. At twelve I wanted to be a plastic surgeon for no other reason than I had a terrible crush on a plastic surgeon on television. I did change my mind soon after and stuck to writing. What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now? What were three works of art — book, painting, piece of music — that you can now say had a great effect on you and influenced your own development as a writer?
One reason is that it tends to mean arriving to conversations very late. So here I am, fashionably late. As I read the trilogy, however, I found that if anything the experience turned out to validate my approach. For one thing, Knife ends with a nearly unbearable cliffhanger. But even leaving aside the cliffhanger, I was happy to have read the Chaos Walking trilogy all at once because the second two books turned out to be so different from the first.

C haos Walking is one of those series that will change your life. It is the kind of trilogy you want to finish while at the same time you don't want the series to end. You will be thinking about it weeks or even months after you have read it. The trilogy is very sad but definitely unique. If you can handle the real brutality of war, I highly recommend these books. The stories are unique as they are set in a very different alternative universe.
Riding high on a wave of awards and rave reviews for his first YA science-fiction novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go , Patrick Ness has delivered an equally powerful sequel, The Ask and the Answer , which features a grim, dystopian premise; well-rounded, thorny characters; and a complex, suspenseful plot. Ness spoke with Bookshelf by phone from his home in London. Do you feel British yet? In some ways. Writers are kind of on the fringe anyway, observing, writing things down.
