Old Custer by Eli Cash

Outlandish polemic by celebrated bon vivant Eli Cash restlessly argues that George Custer not only survived the Battle of Little Bighorn, but went on to become a naturalist, as well as godfather, as it were, of the national park system. Cash wields historical data seemingly conjured out of thin air to suggest that, among other things, Custer helped save the Albert squirrel from extinction.

Heralded as heir to Cormac McCarthy and Jay McInerney, Cashs struggles with mescaline doomed his grandiose literary ambitions, his implosion culminating in the crash of his 64 Austin Healy 3000 into the residence of Royal Tenenbaum, Esq., which resulted in the death of a Tenenbaum family pet. Cash has returned to his post as Assistant Professor of English Literature at Brooks College, where his damage is now restricted to his students.

Readers are encouraged to instead seek out copies of Family of Geniuses by Etheline Tenenbaum or Three Plays by Margot Tenenbaum (both sadly out of print) or even Dudleys World by Raleigh St. Clair for far greater insight into what was once referred to as the Cash Mystique.

Eli Cash quotes

Educated At University Of London. Occupations Rabbi, Lawyer. Religion Judaism, Christianity. Eli Cash Quotes. Eli Cash Character.

Ostensibly based on a non-existent novel, and told with a narrative influenced by the literature of J. Salinger , the story follows the lives of three gifted siblings who experience great success in youth, and even greater disappointment and failure in adulthood. The children's eccentric father Royal Tenenbaum Hackman leaves them in their adolescent years, returning to them after they have grown, and falsely claiming to have a terminal illness. Long after he was shunned by his family, Royal gradually reconciles with his children and ex-wife Huston. With a variety of influences, including Louis Malle 's film The Fire Within and Orson Welles ' film The Magnificent Ambersons , the story involves themes of the dysfunctional family , lost greatness, and redemption.

There is a narrator who is reading the book version of the story, though he is never identified. He is omniscient. The tone is often dry, deadpan, comic, and absurd, but it can also be very melancholic, tragic, and dark. Protagonist: Royal Tenenbaum, Antagonist: There is not one central villain, though Eli ends up being the antagonist at the end. The major conflict is that Royal wants to ingratiate himself back into his family by lying that he is terminally ill, but they won't accept him back.
