Analysis of Mr. Dolphus Raymond in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Maycomb doesn't quite get Mr. He's always drinking from a paper bag; he sits with the African-Americans; and Jem tells Scout and Dill that he's had several children with an African-American woman—even though he's from an old, rich family. On the other hand, maybe being from an old, rich family allows him to live how he likes without worrying about what other people think. Later, Scout and Dill find out that Mr. Raymond does care about what other people think, but not in the way they expected. His paper bag turns out to be hiding not whisky but Coke, and his constant drunkenness is a put-on.

In private, he is a sober and humane family man who abhors the hypocrisy and brutality of Maycomb society. He purposefully constructs this first identity to provide an easily understandable image to his neighbors and conceal his true disgust with Maycomb and the respectable South. In the front Dolphus presents to the town, he is a thoughtless drunkard. He has no legitimate reasons for living like he does, with a black woman and in the company of blacks. It reinforces the popular suppositions on race- only drunks who know no better treat Negroes as equals- rather than challenging them. This image is thoroughly false. Dolphus does not drink notably; there is nothing but Coca-Cola in the sack.
