The Secret Life of Salvador Dali by Salvador Dali

This early autobiography, which takes Dali through his late thirties, is as startling and unpredictable as his art. On its first publication, the reviewer of Books observed: It is impossible not to admire this painter as writer ... (Dali) succeeds in doing exactly what he sets out to do ... communicates the snobbishness, self-adoration, comedy, seriousness, fanaticism, in short the concept of life and the total picture of himself he sets out to portray. Superbly illustrated with over eighty photographs of Dali and his works, and scores of Dali drawings and sketches.

Salvador Dali

Un Chien Andalou recreates an ethereal setting in which images are presented in montaged clips in order to jostle reality and tap the unconscious, shocking the viewer awake. For example, in this clip we find a glaring cow's eye in a woman's eye socket soliciting feelings of discomfort. In the scene that follows, a razor blade slashes said eye in extreme close-up. In fact, it's become known as the first Surrealist film yet remains paramount in the canon of experimental film to this day. Her mouth near a male's crotch suggests impending fellatio while he seems to be literally "cut" at the knees from which he bleeds, a sign of a stifled sexuality.

His paintings also evince a fascination for Classical and Renaissance art, clearly visible through his hyper-realistic style and religious symbolism of his later work. Who Was Salvador Dali?

The Spanish painter Salvador Dali remains one of the most controversial and paradoxical artists of the twentieth century. Over last few decades, Salvador Dali has gradually come to be seen, alongside the likes of Picasso and Matisse , as a prodigious figure whose life and work occupies a central and unique position in the history of modern art. Dali has also come to be regarded not only as its most well-known exponent but also, to many people, as an individual artist synonymous with Surrealism itself. In addition, Dali was a great artist who was a great self-publicist and showman. The combination was an irresistible formula for success.

He relished courting the masses, and he was probably better known, especially in the United States, than any other 20th-century painter, including even fellow Spaniard Pablo Picasso. Diffidence was not in his vocabulary. And many art critics believe that he peaked artistically in his 20s and 30s, then gave himself over to exhibitionism and greed. He died in at age I have had to work very hard to make it clear how serious he really was.

The others splash about in the bath. The madman thinks he is sane. I know I am mad. Since then, my ambition has only grown". I close my eyes and, with incredible details of absolute, scatological precision, I see myself being slowly eaten and digested by an infernal swarm of large greenish maggots gorging themselves on my flesh. Thus the first image I saw on awakening was the painting I had begun, as it was the last I saw in the evening when I retired.
